Document Description:

Matthew Calbraith Butler, a former Confederate soldier and South Carolina and U.S. congressman, wrote these two letters about the Spanish-American War from Cuba. The two letters, written to U.S. Secretary of War R.A. Alger and N.G. Gonzales, editor of The State newspaper, discuss the annexation of Cuba and the events of the Spanish-American War. These letters provide insight into how one South Carolinian saw the Spanish-American War.
