Marion Williams, a 12 year-old boy writes to Governor Ibra C. Blackwood asking for the Governor to help him “to a tent.” Marion writes that he is “a little Baptist Christian boy” who has “exccepted” Jesus as his Savior and feels called to preach. The letter describes how Marion wants to go to school and has been holding prayer meetings, but wants to go to a tent by next spring and hopes the Governor can help him.
The reply from the Governor’s office, written by the Secretary to the Governor on October 12, 1933, says that the Governor is unable to respond personally to the “many demands made upon him” and that there are no funds for “such purposes.” The letter concludes wishing Marion success in his work.

Dear Mr Blackwood.
I am a little boy 12 yrs. old in the 5 grade in school: and I am writing to you for a little help, if you can possibly help me. I have exccepted Jesus as my Savouir [sic] and I am trusting in him each day I live. I have ben living for him for 5 years, and the lords has called me to preach and am asking [page 2] you if it is not to mush, to help me to a tent, to preach in. I feel that I must go to work for the father. Although I want to go to school throu [sic] the week, on Saturday and Sunday I have been holding prayer meetings, and I have been goning from place to place talking for the lord and I feel deep down in my heart that you will help me God will bless you. And I pray you are trusting him each day may God Bless you in everything you do. Now Mr Gov. I hope you can help me to a tent, [page 3] by next spring, when school closes and it mabe so that I can pay you a visit Before school is out, but you no that every one that is serving God has work to do. and May this short letter from a little Baptist Christian boy touch a little tender place in your hart [sic]. enought that God will arriange [sic] it so you may help me to a tent, to preach under by next spring. please Mr. Gov. answer my letter from

Indicator USHC-7.4 Explain the causes and effects of the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression, including the disparity in incomes, limited government regulation, stock market speculation, and the collapse of the farm economy; wealth distribution, investment, and taxes; government policies and the Federal Reserve System; and the effects of the Depression on human beings and the environment.
