An 1862 image of Private Young H. E. Hitch who enlisted from Greenville District in Company I, 16th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action June 19, 1864 at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. Most South Carolina Confederate images were made on glass in the photographic format known as ambrotypes. Possibly as many as 18,000 SC soldiers had their images taken during 1861-1862.
